Thailand-Malaysia Collaboration: A Land Bridge Project Paving the Way for Mutual Benefits

In a visionary move set to transform regional connectivity, Thailand’s ambitious plan to construct sea ports and a land bridge is poised to have far-reaching implications, particularly benefiting Malaysia, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The strategic project aims to streamline shipping routes, bypassing the Straits of Melaka and bringing about economic advantages for both nations.

Speaking after a one-day working visit to Sadao, Songkhla Province in Thailand, Prime Minister Anwar underscored Malaysia’s active involvement in and gains from the project. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has assured Anwar of Malaysia’s role in the venture, emphasizing collaboration between the two countries.

The proposed land bridge, still in its initial stages, has garnered attention due to its potential impact on the northern Peninsular Malaysia. Anwar highlighted the positive spirit displayed by his Thai counterpart, stating that discussions revolved around the benefits, facilities, and potential equity for Malaysia.

At the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in San Francisco, Prime Minister Srettha unveiled the project estimated at RM131 billion. The initiative involves the construction of new ports in Ranong and Chumpon, connected by rail and road, promising a shorter sea journey by four days and a 15% reduction in costs between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.

Anwar commended Srettha’s commitment to resolving bilateral issues and ensuring decisions benefit both nations. The Thai Prime Minister’s inclusive approach was evident in discussions about tourism, where he emphasized spreading the benefits to Langkawi, fostering synergy between the countries.

The rare spirit of collaboration between Thailand and Malaysia reflects a shared commitment to mutual growth. Anwar’s working visit focused on assessing the progress of the road alignment project connecting Bukit Kayu Hitam in Malaysia and Sadao in Thailand, a bilateral effort showcasing the dedication of both nations to regional connectivity and economic prosperity. As Thailand steers toward this transformative project, it opens a new chapter in the longstanding collaboration between these two Southeast Asian neighbors.
